About Aviation Family Network

Our History

The Aviation Family Network was founded to support the families, friends, and loved ones of pilots navigating the journey of addiction and mental health. Understanding the process of the HIMS program, the challenges of addiction, and the impact on the family can make a significant difference in achieving successful recovery. This network provides essential support and guidance to those accompanying their loved ones through this difficult path.

Addressing the complex and multifaceted challenges of substance abuse disorders and mental health concerns for both pilots and their families is of critical importance within the aviation industry. Pilots and their loved ones often face unique pressures, regulations, and cultural attitudes that can complicate the process of seeking treatment and support for these interrelated issues. Implementing comprehensive, integrated approaches to care that consider the distinctive needs and experiences of this workforce, as well as providing tailored resources for the families supporting them, is essential for fostering a more compassionate, recovery-oriented environment across the industry. By bridging the gap between addiction and mental health concerns, the aviation community can promote the overall well-being of its pilots and their loved ones, ultimately contributing to safer, healthier work environments and stronger, more resilient families.

As a commercial airline pilot wife who has been through this journey, I know firsthand the isolation and stigma that comes with loved ones struggling with addiction in the aviation industry. This site is dedicated to the family members who are supporting their pilot on the road to recovery.  I see you!

Understanding the Family Impact and HIMS Program

Substance use disorders, including alcoholism, are now understood as integral elements of a more comprehensive disease framework. This disease state impacts commercial pilots to a comparable extent as the general population. The HIMS program was established to provide a structured pathway through which affected individuals can receive treatment and be successfully reinstated to piloting duties under the FAA's Special Issuance Regulations (14 CFR 67.401).

The HIMS program involves cooperation among company representatives, pilot peer volunteers, healthcare professionals, and FAA medical specialists. While drawing from treatment principles in clinical and industrial settings, the program has specific elements tailored to the safety-sensitive nature of the airline transportation system. Successful HIMS-model programs operate in the U.S., Canada, and other countries worldwide.

Understanding addiction is a disease that extends far beyond the individual afflicted, with profound consequences for their loved ones. Family members often suffer and may feel lost, unsure of where to turn for help and support. Fortunately, a range of support systems and resources are available to assist these families as they navigate the challenges presented by addiction, including peer-led support groups and educational programs designed to provide guidance and practical coping strategies.

The HIMS program, while focused on the treatment and recovery of the pilot, also recognizes the critical role that family members play in the process. Most program protocols encourage the involvement of spouses, partners, and other close relatives, as their support and understanding are essential for long-term success. Accordingly, the HIMS program seeks to empower family members by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and strategies needed to create a nurturing environment that fosters the pilot's sustained sobriety and well-being.

Acknowledging addiction is a pivotal moment in the recovery journey. It's like flipping a switch that sets the recovery process in motion.

Our Definition of "Family": You Are Welcome Here

At the Aviation Family Network, when we speak of "family," we mean it in its broadest, most inclusive sense.

We recognize that the support systems that sustain aviation professionals are as diverse as the industry itself. For us, "family" encompasses:

    • Traditional nuclear families (spouses/partners and children)

    • Blended and multi-generational families

    • Single parents and their children

    • Chosen family – the deeply trusted friends, mentors, colleagues, and significant others who form your essential support network.

    • Significant others and domestic partners without formal legal recognition.

    • Individuals supporting a pilot – because sometimes, your strongest support comes from one critical relationship.

Our resources and community are designed to offer support, education,  and pathways to help for these issues, recognizing that early  intervention and strong support systems are key to wellness and safety.

    Your Confidentiality is Our Priority

We understand that discussing mental health and substance use  requires immense trust. We are committed to creating a safe and private  environment.

    • Any sharing within our community forums or support groups is treated with utmost respect and confidentiality.

    • Seeking information or resources through our website is a private act. We will not share your personal information or inquiries.

    • Our goal is to be a safe first step. We provide anonymous resources and can help connect you with professional services that also prioritize your privacy.

Here, you can find information, ask questions, and seek support without fear of judgment or breach of trust.

You are not alone. Whatever your family looks like, you belong here.

Why an Inclusive Definition Matters in Aviation

The unique pressures of an aviation career—irregular schedules, time  away from home, and the high-stakes nature of the profession—can impact  mental well-being and stress levels for everyone connected to a pilot.  Substance abuse and mental health challenges do not discriminate based  of family structure; neither do we.

By defining family inclusively, we ensure that everyone who plays a vital role in a pilot's life has access to resources,  support, and community. Whether you are a spouse, a best friend, a  sibling, or a partner, if you are part of an aviator's support system,  you are part of our family.

    Aviation Family Network

Is A Safe Space for Difficult Conversations

We provide a judgment-free zone to discuss the challenges that can affect any family system, including:

    • Stress, Anxiety, and Depression

    • Substance Use and Misuse

    • Relationship strains related to the aviation lifestyle
